The equipment is placed outside the visitor centre and will be utilised by children visiting the facility.
Prisons’ director Brian Edwards said encouraging and supporting family contact is an important part of rehabilitation and reintegration.
Attorney General Vanessa Goodwin said the playground has broader benefits in addition to providing activity for children during visits.
“Play is an important part of family connection and community development. The playground will keep children happy during visits, but more importantly it will encourage prisoners to rehabilitate and adapt to a normal life once their sentence ends” Minister Goodwin said.
The play area was funded by the Tasmanian Community Fund and the Christian Family Centre, and includes slides, climbing frames, a basketball hoop and a rubberised soft fall.
Island Recreation supported the Prisoner Work Crew to install the equipment.
