Doughty, 33, who finished fifth in this year’s women's PT4 triathlon in Rio, will participate in the Launceston Triathlon Club’s maiden women’s-only event on Saturday and open race on Sunday at Beauty Point.
“It’s important to promote triathlon and women in sport in general… I remember when I did my first triathlon and it’s very intimidating sometimes with a lot of fast and fit men coming past you,” the former successful equestrian rider, who was born without her right hand, said on Friday.
“The transition from equestrian has been exciting and rewarding.
“I think people with disabilities often feel limited or others feel like someone with a disability is limited in what the can do, we are all going to face challenges and certain issues in life – let’s not let disability be one of them.
“If there’s something you want to do just give it a go.”
More than 80 women are expected to compete in Saturday’s exhibition – the first outing for the psychologist and 2015 World Triathlon Grand Final bronze medalist since August's Games.
