Mercedes Benz F1 team boss Toto Wolff claims to have been contacted by 80 per cent of the current grand prix drivers for the seat, but it seems the likely choice will be current Manor driver Pascal Wehrlein.
The 22-year-old has come through the Mercedes Benz Academy system and, in 2015, won the German Touring Car (DTM) championship driving for Mercedes, and it just so happens Wolff is part of the young German’s management team.
Wehrlein has been very impressive this year, and earlier in the season completed ten days of testing in the all-conquering Mercedes including testing of the 2017 specification Pirelli tyres.
Wehrlein was disappointed to miss out on a drive with Force India, but if he does get the drive at Mercedes it will prove to be a blessing in disguise.
