Hawthorn announced on Thursday that the 28-year-old had extended his contract with the club until the end of 2019.
He would have qualified as a unrestricted free agent next year.
“Grant is a really important player for us and a vital member of our backline,” List manager Graham Wright said.
“He has been a part of this club for over 10 years now and we were really keen to retain him.
“We are really pleased that Grant has signed on for another two seasons and believe he has plenty of good footy ahead of him.”
Birchall has played 240 games.
The Hawks will play arch-rivals Geelong at University of Tasmania in Launceston at 7.40pm on Friday, February 17, as part of the JLT Community Series.
