In late November, eight people died in Melbourne after what is believed to be one of the worst asthma thunderstorms in the world.
The weather event occurs when a high grass pollen count meets moisture and wind, which breaks the pollen into smaller pieces.
This allows it to enter the lungs’ airways, prompting attacks for those with allergies.
Asthma Foundation Tasmania general manager Wendy Evans said such events could happen here.
“It is always a possibility, give that we do have some rye grass here. You can never say never,” Ms Evans said.
She encouraged asthma sufferers to take their preventative medication, as prescribed, and always carry their reliever medication with them.
