Within the list of 46 names of some pretty obvious no-nos, like Satan, and Prime Minister. Most of them are official titles, like Sergeant, Majesty, or Officer.
Victorian parents looking to commemorate the late Prince by naming your offspring after him, you’re out of luck. Same goes for Holden fans – no Commodore.
In Tasmania, however, you have a bit more leeway. A spokeswoman for the justice department said applications to register a name were asses on a case by case basis.
There are no names that the registrar would automatically reject, she said.
When Births, Deaths and Marriages does come across a name that falls under the definition of “prohibited”, the applicant is contacted and encourage to re-consider the name, the spokeswoman said.
“It is very rare for a name to be rejected in Tasmania,” she said.
