About 3.12am four trucks attended the City of Launceston’s former parks and recreation building.
Upon arrival TFS crews found the two storey building fully engulfed.
A witness described seeing a “big ball of fire” coming from the building.
Three Conservation Volunteers Australia vans parked adjacent to the building were also damaged due to radiating heat from the fire.
Launceston Council has not used the building for more than two years.
Tasmania Police said Youth Futures and Tamar Northern Resource Management had planned to utilise the building for office space.
A Council spokesmen said no significant contents were stored in the building.
“There will be no impact on the Council’s service provision or other operations,” he said.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
Damages were estimated at $500,000.
