With a vocal range from songbird to snarl backed with grungy crunch of Glaspy guitar work, Emotions and Math manages to showcase the sound of a confident twenty-something navigating the relationships and realities of life. Opener and title track Emotions and Math, sets the tone for the record. A classic early 2000s styled post grunge rock and roll ditty that chronicles the time between seeing your significant other and the paranoia that sets in when they’re away. Lead single, You and I, feels like the rebirth of Elliott Smith styled songwriting. Glaspy detailing the intricacies of a love that’s grown a little lop sided and isn’t worth the effort over the crisp sound of her telecaster guitar.
The rough and ready production of the track allowing Glaspy’s punk-influenced sneer to shine throughout.
The latter half of the album steps back from the rock numbers, introducing blues influenced jazz and pop numbers that could include early John Mayer as a reference point, her distorted electric guitar replaced in parts by acoustic instruments and giving her voice a chance to soar. If only all debut albums were this enjoyable!
