Science fiction action film The Fifth Element was released in 1997, an unexpected box-office success thanks to the ridiculous ventures of Bruce Willis’ character Korben Dallas, a taxi driver who is dragged into the apocalyptic life of orange-haired alien woman Leeloo, played by Milla Jovovich, against Gary Oldman’s villain, Jean-Baptiste-Emmanuel Zorg.
Love it or hate it, the film became a sci-fi classic, and now a dedicated band of Launceston The Fifth Element fans are working to bring it to Village Cinemas for a one-off screening on Monday, January 9 at 6.30pm.
The catch? For the screening to go ahead, they have to sell enough tickets – which they’re doing through crowdfunding cinema-on-demand website FanForce.
Organiser Joee Kelk said the screening would be both an anniversary and a chance for fans to get together and enjoy the classic film.
“I love The Fifth Element, and I saw that FanForce had managed to get two screenings of the Embrace film in Launceston,” she said.
“I thought it was a cool idea to get cinema-on-demand, so I thought … maybe we could try The Fifth Element.”
Ms Kelk said that the campaign still needs to sell approximately 15 tickets for the screening to go ahead: if it doesn’t, no one who registers for a ticket will be charged.
But Ms Kelk is confident that enough tickets will be purchased before the cut-off of December 13 – and Leeloo will be welcomed to Launceston.
