Tasmanian rugby development manager Luke Burgess is hopeful of hearing that the state will be given the nod for one of up to 10 varsity spots under the semi-professional NUSA seven-a-side format.
No set date is confirmed when the franchises will be announced, the former 37-Test Wallaby star said.
But kick-off for NUSA has been locked in for August.
Tasmania participated for the first time at the National Sevens Championship in Adelaide last month in anticipation for the new women’s NUSA season in 2017. But both Tasmania’s women and men failed to win a game.
Burgess in his new role with the Tasmanian Rugby Union first introduced the inaugural Tasmanian Rugby Sevens Series throughout September and October.
