The classic image of a lonely writer huddled over a single candle and a notebook in an austere attic may not have much weight these days, but for many writers it’s still hard to find anyone to talk to about the challenges of putting words to paper.

Writer’s support group Write Here, an initiative based off a national program, has arrived in Launceston to give writers a space to meet and write together.
The first meet-up took place on Saturday at the QVMAG, Inveresk, with a small group of local authors to enjoying time together and writing some words in company.
Write Here events are hosted across Australia every month by Writers Bloc, an online literary hub.
In Launceston the Write Here volunteer coordinator is local writer Tessa Wynne, who said the group was an excellent way for Launceston’s authors to meet and share experiences with each other.
In particular she hopes to encourage more young writers to join in and take advantage of the support of their fellows.
“My hope is to … in future also [welcome] people that haven’t done much writing before and realise that they don’t have to be published to be a writer,” Ms Wynne said.
She hopes the Write Here events will continue throughout 2017 in Tasmania.
“This has solidified how good it is to get together with other people,” she said.
Writer Shirley Patton attended the Write Here event, and said she enjoyed the chance to talk about the technicalities of writing with understanding friends.
“It’s great to talk to people whose eyes don’t glaze over when you talk about writing,” she said.
