In 1892 the home was completed for Englishman Dr Cole and his Scottish wife Janet, who resided there for the next 45 years. The name Arcoona is aboriginal for ‘flowing waters below’ and refers to the Meander River which runs in the valley of the hill where the house stands.
Arcoona has had a variety of uses during its lifetime. While Dr Cole and his family lived there, he used the back entrance near the billiard room as a reception and doctors’ surgery until he retired in 1928.
