Premier and Minister for Sport Will Hodgman welcomed Scott Brennan, Kate Hornsey, Dana Faletic, Clint Freeman, Belinda Goss, Hollie Grima Florance and Paul Sproule at a special induction ceremony in Hobart.

He said the sporting hall of fame celebrates Tasmania’s strong sporting heritage and the exceptional achievements of inspirational athletes.

“The inductees have not only excelled on the sporting field, but are also recognised for their conduct and attitude, and all are wonderful role models,” Mr Hodgman said.

​Between them, Hobart rowers Scott Brennan, Kate Hornsey and Dana Faletic won gold, silver and bronze medals at 2008, 2012 and 2004 Olympic Games respectively.

All three attended multiple Olympics with Hornsey and Faletic adding world championships to their extensive resumes.

Evandale’s Grima Florance was a member of the only Australian women’s basketball team to win a women’s world championship in 2006 and also won gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2006 and silver at the Olympic Games in 2008.

The first archer to be inducted into the hall of fame, Freeman, of Trevallyn, was also the the first Tasmanian to hold a national title in the sport and the first selected for an Australian team. He represented Australia from 1992 to 2010 winning two world titles and setting 12 world records.

Goss, of Acacia Hills, is the first female cyclist to be inducted. She won 15 national titles and was the first Tasmanian female cyclist to compete internationally and won three consecutive bronze medals in the world championship scratch race.

Sproule played in two Hobart premiership sides, 60 games for Essendon, was in Richmond’s premiership teams of 1973-74 and was captain-coach in Sandy Bay’s premierships of 1976-78. 

Several hours after the inductions, the Derwent Entertainment Centre also hosted the Tasmanian athlete of the year awards when Paralympic silver-medal-winning sailor Matt Bugg was named overall winner.
