The second Mannalargenna Day will be held at the Tebrakunna Visitors Centre overlooking Little Musselroe Bay on December 3 and 4, combining cultural workshops, bus tours and an ochre and smoking ceremony.
Melythina tiakana warrana Aboriginal Corporation director Fiona Hamilton said a large number of Tasmanian Aboriginal people were descendants of Mannalargenna.
“He was such a key warrior and chieftain and a celebrated spiritual man within our culture, and he's so important to so many Tasmanian Aboriginal families that we just felt it would be a lovely thing to acknowledge him and his life,” Ms Hamilton said.
“We know quite a bit about Mannalargenna and his life but I think the opportunity of a day like Mannalargenna Day is for people to come together and actually talk about what they know about this man.”
As patron of Mannalargenna Day Governor Kate Warner will be guest of honour at the event, which is expected to attract between 100 and 200 people.
Ms Hamilton said Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people were equally welcome at the celebration.
“The important thing is that everybody knows that they're welcome and it's a culturally safe event.
“It's a culturally safe space for people to be in, it doesn't matter where you're from and what your culture is it's a completely safe space.”
Aboriginal elder Patsy Cameron said the Tebrakunna region held a special significance as the location of past hunting grounds and campsites of Tasmanian Aboriginal people.
“That cape holds the essence of cultural activity that can be traced back many thousands of years,” Mrs Cameron said.
“A great majority of Tasmanian Aboriginal people in the present day can trace their heritage back to that country and it's through a number of women, at least four of the women were Mannalargenna’s daughters.”
Visitors are encouraged to bring rugs, chairs and a picnic lunch to supplement cultural nibbles and refreshments.
