The city’s official celebration, the Christmas in the City event, will launch the festive season on Friday night from 6pm to 9pm at the Brisbane Street Mall and Charles Street.
Santa Claus will light Tasmania’s largest Christmas tree at 8:30pm, surrounded by a night of shopping, a concert, food and drinks, and free children’s activities.
The Christmas tree will wear some fresh decorations this year, with 40 new LED stars created by Christmas Design Solutions.
Cityprom executive director Vanessa Cahoon said that the stars are “quite unique”.
Colin Kent from Christmas Design Solutions said the holographic stars carry colourful LED lights, and are all networked together to create brilliant lighting patterns.
The fibreglass stars are created in Tasmania using materials imported from Germany and America.
“This has never been done anywhere in the world, what we’ve done here,” he said.
