The network was switched on yesterday in partnership with the University of Tasmania, Sense-T and Definium, with the state government committing $100,000 to fund the city-wide long range, low power network.
Information Technology and Innovation Minister Michael Ferguson said the LORA network, which runs similar to WIFI, was suited to IoT applications.
“The network gateways and sensors will be manufactured by Launceston-based IT company Definium, and the project run from the new Enterprize Launceston innovation hub,” he said.
“Not only will Launceston be the first city in Australia to operate a LORA network but the devices used to run it will also be made locally.”
The network will enable a number of innovative projects as Launceston works towards being one of the three initial Smart Cities in the country.
Work on the pilot network has started and is expected to be operational in 2017.
