Andrew Gaskell’s whereabouts is being investigated by Tasmanian, Australian and international authorities.
The 25-year-old went hiking in Mulu National Park in the Sarawak region on October 18 and is several days overdue.
He indicated to family members that he would be hiking for a week but he may have told people in Malaysia that he would be hiking for a shorter period, Tasmania Police said on Friday.
His family in Hobart contacted police on Thursday.
Acting Inspector Darren Latham said the national park was remote.
“The area where he was going hiking does not have had good mobile coverage so his family was expecting to have difficulties contacting him,” he said.
“Attempts by his family to make contact with him since Tuesday have been unsuccessful.
“We’re also asking anyone who may have friends backpacking in Malaysia to share our post with them in case any other backpackers have seen him in recent days.”
Mr Gaskell’s Facebook says he currently resides in Cairns, Far North Queensland.
His profile says he worked as a structural engineer for Colefax Associates Consulting Engineers in Cairns until June this year.
