The woman who was killed in a two-vehicle crash on the Murchison Highway at Waratah has been formally identified by police.
Madison Ann Brown, 20, was killed instantly when her Nissan Pulsar collided with a Toyota Landcruiser on Wednesday.
Acting Inspector Steve Jones said the woman’s next of kin had been notified.
Police believe Ms Brown was returning to Penguin from Cradle Mountain when the crash occurred.
Initial investigations led police to believe Ms Brown was traveling north on the Murchison Highway before veering into the southbound lane, crashing into a Toyota Landcruiser traveling south.
The cause of the crash is yet to be determined but police do not believe alcohol, drugs or speed were a factor.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or was in the vicinity is urged to contact the Western District Crash Investigation Service on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
UPDATE Thursday 12.46pm:
Tasmania Police believe the Nissan Pulsar, which was traveling north on the Murchison Highway before it crashed into a Toyota Landcruiser on Wednesday, crossed over into the southbound land, causing the crash.
The driver of the Nissan Pulsar, a woman in her 20s, died instantly.
Acting Inspector Steve Jones said the woman’s next of kin has been notified but police are yet to make a formal identification.
“The female driver sustained some significant injuries” he said.
The 19-year-old male driver of the Landcruiser sustained leg injuries but was expected to be released from hospital on Thursday.
Acting Inspector Steve Jones said the man was very lucky to escape serious injury.
Police said there was no indication that speed, alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
On Wednesday, officers arrived at the scene within minutes of the crash as they were undertaking rural road strategy policing in the area.
Acting Inspector Steve Jones said driving conditions on Wednesday were good and the road was clear.
Crash Investigation Services will survey the scene on Friday to determine the speed of the vehicles, where the impact occurred and whether there were any mechanical problems with the cars.
Investigations will continue over the next few weeks as the police begin to prepare a report for the coroner.

Tasmania Police is calling for witnesses to the two-vehicle crash on the Murchison Highway at Waratah on Wednesday.
A woman in her 20s was killed after her Nissan Pulsar, which was traveling in a northerly direction, collided with a white Toyota Landcruiser travelling south.
The woman is yet to be formally identified.
The male driver and sole occupant of the Landcruiser sustained leg injuries but is in a stable condition at the North West Regional Hospital.
Police are calling for witnesses or anyone who may have been in the vicinity of the crash to contact the Western District Crash Investigation Service on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A woman in her 20s has been killed following a two-vehicle crash on the Murchison Highway at Waratah.
The woman was travelling north about 4pm on Wednesday when her silver Nissan Pulsar collided with a white Toyota Land Cruiser which was travelling south.
The male driver travelling in the Toyota has been transported to the North-West Regional Hospital with suspected leg injuries.
The woman is yet to be identified.

Police expect to reopen the road about 9pm.
UPDATE 5PM:
A person has been killed following a two-vehicle crash on the Murchison Highway at Waratah.
The crash occurred shortly before 4pm.
The stretch of the Murchison Highway between the Waratah turnoff and Cradle Mountain Link Road is likely to remain closed for several hours while an investigation takes place.
Police have advised motorists travelling on the highway from the West and North West-Coast to take an alternative route.
EARLIER:
Police and emergency services are responding to a serious crash on the Murchison Highway.
Tasmania Police said the highway is closed between Burnie and Tullah at Fossey River.
Police are yet to advise whether anyone is injured.
