“That was a bit of a shock,” Mrs Darcey said.
She visited the doctor for a pre-pregnancy check-up after she and her husband decided to start a family. Mrs Darcey asked her doctor to assess a lump while there. It was found to be malignant. Since surgery and radiation, Mrs Darcey has been cancer-free for 14 years. She began the Breasts Out For Research committee. The group began with Mrs Darcey and a few mates, and has grown over 10 years.
BOFR raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, and have so far raised almost $250,000. Mrs Darcey’s three daughters motivate her efforts for the NBCF, which is working toward finding a breast cancer cure by 2030.
“My husband’s sister has also had breast cancer, so the odds are stacked up against them … and I don’t want them to deal with breast cancer,” she said.
