Drag It Down On You is the second album from the Melbourne band, and it was released to a very warm welcome at the start of September.
Much like the poisonous oleander tree that graces its cover, the album’s sweet exterior masks a deeper meaning.
“It’s a really honest record,” Lanyon said.
“That’s what really gets me hooked on a record: honesty. If I believe what the person is saying then I’m in.”
While lyrically and conceptually, Lanyon describes it as the “darkest record that we’ve done”, it’s and album riddled with pop-like sing-a-longs.
But it’s not a foreign ground for Ceres.
“On the last record, the big song off it, I Feel Fine I Feel Sick, is about when my dad died but it’s a really poppy song and (at shows) everyone’s jumping about and having fun and I’m like, ‘I don’t know how I feel this’,” Lanyon said.
“(Dad) was a very creative person, I’m a designer because of him. I think he’d love it (the juxtaposition). I think he’d be proud of I’ve been able to create.”
Tasmanian fans will be able to get their own live taste of the new record when the band plays at Launceston’s Til The Wheels Fall Off next weekend.
It’s the only Tassie show on the Drag It Down On You tour, and one Lanyon said the band was pumped for, calling Launceston their “home away from home”.
“Our first interstate show was in Launceston,” Lanyon recalled.
“It was at the Pav, and it was when the Breath of Life festival was on.
“We didn’t end up playing until like 2am because of the festival, but everyone from there came to our show and it was the rowdiest show.
“There we were, a green band, worrying that no one would come. But I’m still trying to top that show.”
Ceres will play at Til The Wheels Fall Off on Sunday, November 6, with Luca Brasi, The Scandal, TV Haze, and Hannahband.
Sunday passes are $42.85, available through Oztix.
At the time of writing, weekend passes (November 4 to 6) were still available for $105.10.
