The flood siren will be sounded three times in various locations at Invermay.
SES regional manager Mhairi Revie said the siren will be one way of informing the residents of Invermay and Inveresk that they need to evacuate.
“In the event of a major flood, approximately 3000 residents and up to 270 businesses would require evacuation from the Invermay [and] Inveresk area," she said.
Should an evacuation be required, the siren will be sounded to notify residents and businesses of the flood prone suburbs.
The SES emphasised that in the event of an evacuation, residents and business owners will also be notified via the media, door knocks, the automated telephone messaging system and Emergency Alert.
The siren sounds like an air raid siren.
After the 2016 June floods, Ms Revie said it is important that residence and businesses are prepared for major flood events.
“Disasters will happen and it’s important that the community know, understand and prepare for the risks they face,” she said.
Tasmania Police and the City of Launceston have been collaborating with the SES to create a flood evacuation plan for the Invermay area.
“We are confident that we are well prepared for an evacuation if and when required for the Invermay area,” Ms Revie said.
