A lawyer with more than 25 years experience, Ms Rheinberger takes over the role from Michael Brett, who became a Supreme Court judge in June.
Attorney-General Vanessa Goodwin called Ms Rheinberger’s appointment “historic”.
“Chief Magistrate Rheinberger is eminently qualified for the position, with 25 years of experience in Tasmania’s legal system and over six years in the Magistrates Court of Tasmania, including serving as a Youth Justice Court Magistrate, a Court Mandated Drug Diversion Magistrate, and serving as the President of the Tasmanian Bar Association from 2005-08,” Dr Goodwin said.
The state’s court case backlog is on Ms Rheinberger’s agenda, as is family violence.
She started in the chief magistrate role on Tuesday, after six years as a magistrate.
