RT executive officer Rob Prescott said the two-day event was held in trying conditions on the Huon River at Franklin.
“It was a bit like rowing in the Antarctic with snow on the nearby Hartz Mountains so very cold on and off the water but great to see so many new athletes which is really positive,” Prescott said.
“The North Esk boys group coached by Trevor Barrett and Barry Townsend put in an extraordinarily hard training session over winter and those efforts made them standouts in the under-19 and under-21 groups.
“They are instilling a wonderful culture in the group and the rowers are thriving on that.
“North Esk’s men’s under-21 eight rowed 2000m in 6:03.38 which shows they are very much heading in the right direction. That was probably the standout result of the regatta.”
Jack Barrett and Angus McGlashan won the under-23 pair in which North Esk crews filled the top five places and Barrett led home McGlashan in the under-19 single sculls.
Tamar’s former world champion and London Olympic reserve Blair Tunevitsch returned to competition in a double scull with Buckingham’s Sam Volker and helped produce the race of the weekend.
Buckingham’s Max McQueeney and Alec Paterson pipped them to the line with Huon’s Wilson Mure and Erik Rowan also just a second away.
“It was a fantastic spectacle to see three senior doubles having a great race and swapping bow balls the whole way,” Prescott said.
Fresh from a silver medal at the under-23 world champs, Tamar’s Henry Youl won the men’s under-23 single sculls from Paterson and North Esk’s Rohan Fenner.
The men’s single sculls saw Mure hold off the Tamar trio of Youl, Brendan Longman and Oliver Marsden.
Huon and Tamar combined to defeat Buckingham in the men’s eight, the last race on the program.
