But while Harvey’s AFL career has finally come to an end, the Northern Midlands calendar staple is forging ahead with no end in sight.

The show will celebrate its 160th instalment on Saturday by again offering up the hallmarks of its success – a family-friendly atmosphere, a massive animal nursery and a unique selection of food and entertainment.

Longford Show secretary Kristy Springer said snake shows, showboy and showgirl competitions, showbags and sideshow alley were all lined up as entertainment options for this year’s event. 

“Pelican Puppets, Fishcare and PCYC are always a hit with the kids, they can go and interact so that’s a bit of fun,” Mrs Springer said.

“All the kids love the animal nursery, they can get in and pat some of the animals, that’s always a hit as well.

“It’s just a nice relaxed family vibe to it – a lot of people say it’s the most family oriented show there is.”

Crowds will also be treated to a new medieval knights display.

“They’re all dressed up in period costume, with their swords and they act out a bit – they’ll do a couple of shows.” 

Launceston circus school Circ’s’cool will perform at the show for the first time, with three performances set to take place throughout the day. 

Circ’s’cool owner Schantal Kathriner said the performers were keen to show off their skills to the Longford crowd.

“We’ve done a Tasmanian circus festival, so these girls performed there but this will be their second ever performance for all but one of the girls,” Ms Kathriner said.

“There’s going to be two girls on the tissue, so we’ll have a double silk act, then there will be a girl on the lyra which is a metal ring, there’s going to be a single trapeze and there’s also going to be a rag doll act.”

The show is a smoke-free event and will take place at the Longford Showgrounds from 8am on Saturday.

Tickets are $12 adults for adults, $6 for children and $30 for a family of four.
