From Monday the Huon Valley Council will be dismissed and under formal administration, Local Government minister Peter Gutwein announced on Thursday.

Mr Gutwein met with Governor Kate Warner to dissolve the council during the morning, and informed the councillors and mayor via email at 3pm, the same time he fronted media to make the announcement.

“There was a board of inquiry that was conducted, that board of inquiry recommended two options, one was to dismiss the council immediately or the second was to allow the council the opportunity to demonstrate some leadership and repair relationships within the council,” he said.
“I issued directions but unfortunately the council was not able to meet those directions and therefore has been dismissed.”
Mr Gutwein said the conditions included mediation between mayor Peter Coad and the council’s general manager.
He said details about the appointmented administrator would be released on Friday, with an expectation that they will take over the council’s role for up to 12 months.
