Dan Hong from Mr Wong in Sydney travelled to Tasmania to prepare a Chinese degustation dinner on Friday night with the help of TasTAFE Drysdale Cookery students.
On Sunday Michael Luo, also from Mr Wong, will be joined by local chefs and the students to prepare a Dim Sum lunch for the public.
Dan Hong said it was his first time working so closely with apprentices in classes and if the students could learn one thing it would be that Chinese food is simple.
“It’s not like French food where you need all these different techniques to make it good,” he said.
“As long as you have the flavour and something that is delicious, it doesn’t matter what it looks like, at the end of the day people prefer to eat delicious food over food that looks nice.”
He said the students had been quite receptive to learning about cooking a modern Cantonese menu.
During the visit the chefs also held a workshop for local professionals and teachers at TasTAFE, and spent some time sampling Launceston restaurants including Geronimo, Me Wah and the Black Cow.
