Launceston Civic Square
WHY is the Launceston council going to waste more funds on the mall and Civic Square? The mall in its present location is just a windswept eyesore. Why is the section between St John Street and George Street not being made to replace the present disaster?

It also ties up with the Quadrant Mall. This section is close to existing public toilets. Return the current mall back to a traffic street or bus mall. To be successful a mall needs to be a meeting place with a vast number of food options open till late at night. It also needs some protection from rain to be utilised all year.
To compare our mall with Hobart mall is an eye opener. Hobart mall is not great but it is used by a vast number of people daily. Some of the best malls in the world are no more than blocking off a standard street at 8am and reopening at midnight.
Also no cars are parked in this mall. No wasted money on block pavements. Deliveries take place prior to 8am and the street is scrubbed every morning. A single lane is kept for emergency vehicles and the remainder allows food businesses to move tables and chairs along with public seating in to this street.
The Avenue has a large number of eating establishments already in place. As for Civic Square, use it for car parking it does nothing for the city. The present mall has been an eyesore for far too long, and nothing will ever make Civic Square pedestrian friendly.

Blessing of Bonnets
ON SUNDAY, September 18, we attended Blessing of the Bonnets, Roses from the Heart Memorial at Evandale Uniting Church.
It was a wonderful service in memory of the women convicts and their ancestors. It was an honour to attend along with the Governor of Tasmania and Mr Warner and many interstate visitors.
While tribute has been paid to Christina Henri and others connected to the bonnets, I would like to thank the Blessing of the Bonnets committee for their dedication and hard work. A great deal of organisation was behind not only the church service, but also the refreshments, stalls, entertainment and the formal luncheon.
Despite the rain, it was a very enjoyable day. Well done Evandale.

Loan Scheme
COUNCILS are very excited about the $60 million loan scheme announced by the government. I hope they curb their excitement enough to note the word loan and that it will have to be repaid. How do they intend to factor that in the budgets? The words "rates rises" spring to mind.
Jenny Bishop, Newnham.
Foxes
REPLYING to Don Davey of Launceston (The Examiner, September 26) about there being no foxes in Tasmania, I quite agree with him and how our government has wasted our hard earned money trying to find foxes that are not here.
Wouldn’t this money have been better spent on more police and a better health and education system? I think what we need is less politicians and councillors. We would be a much richer state.
Robert Jaffray, Legerwood.
Stimulus
MOST in the North are very happy with the state government’s announcement of money to help
get things moving with jobs in the North.
Only two have spoken out against it and of course that is Opposition Leader Bryan Green and cohort Bass Greens MHA Andrea Dawkins both, as always giving negative reviews of anything that the government does.
Every little bite helps so let’s make the most of it and get things moving.
