The move to the new model – the Northern Tasmania Development Corporation – will see council’s formally agree to wind-up Northern Tasmania Development as an association from December 31, 2016.
The planned change evolved from recommendations made in a report undertaken by Bill Fox and Associates which reviewed regional bodies in Northern Tasmania.
The report outlined the need for a governance overhaul which included the appointment of a skills-based board, an independent chair, additional funding and greater private sector involvement.
The goals of NTDC’s skills-base board will include increasing the regions’s Gross Regional Products by five per cent pa to 2026, compared to only 0.5 per cent pa over the past 10 years.
The corporation will also strive to help create 8,000 new jobs within 10 years and increase the average weekly pay packet by $100 in real terms.
All mayors based across the state’s North, except for Dorset mayor Greg Howard, are expected to attend Friday’s meeting,
It’s understood that a new constitution and shareholders agreement will be adopted at the meeting.
If all mayors agree to the new governance model, the next step will be to recruit a new independent chair by mid-November and six board directors by the end of the December.
