When the 93-year-old Grenoch Home resident takes part in the aged care centre’s music therapy program each week, she is able to relive memories she has not visited for many years.

“Everybody that comes in listens and enjoys and we have a little chatter between ourselves about the past or what’s happening in the future,” Mrs Edwards.

“I listen to jazz music … I used to dance a lot so I like listening to the jazz.

“On the whole, it’s a very entertaining hour.” 

Since the home introduced music therapy into its routine there has been a big, and noticeable, change in residents. 

The centre now has about 20 iPods, with each resident involved given their own playlist of favourite songs and artists to listen to. 

Meander Valley Life board member Christine Chilcott has witnessed the change this can make firsthand. 

“It’s taking the perception of ageing to the next century,” Mrs Chilcott said.

“A lot of people can’t communicate in any other way but by art or music and I’ve noticed with the iPod program, as soon as you put the music on they’ve got a smile on their face. 

“It takes them back to another era and usually takes them back to happy memories.” 

She said seeing the residents transform in front of her eyes was an emotional experience.

“It’s as if a light bulb goes off and they remember a particular time,” Mrs Chilcott said.

“It’s just so amazing to watch.” 

The Meander Valley Festival of Creative Ageing in October celebrates the Tasmanian community and what opportunities are out there for older people and their families – including music therapy. 

There will be 22 events across the week including a wine and cheese evening at the Grenoch Home, a creative workshop at the Deloraine Day Centre and an art therapy workshop at the Westbury Day Centre. 

The festival will run from October 10 to 14 at locations across the North and North-West.
