From pub to  award-winning medical hub, the Launceston Medical Centre on Wellington Street has come a long way in the past two years and its plans for growth have not finished yet.

Work is ongoing at the site as they continue to expand the new modern facilities by incorporating 14 consultation rooms, an open and relaxing reception area, cafe and retail space. The growth will also see LMC merging with fellow practice Parkview Medical Practice to increase GP numbers to 14.  

Dr Jerome Muir Wilson, GP and director of Launceston Medical, is looking forward to the merger which will see comprehensive services remaining in Launceston.

“Building on Parkview’s quality reputation of their doctors and staff they saw an opportunity to be part of the LMC at Launceston Health Hub,” he said. 

“For Launceston Medical Centre the addition of further practitioners make the extended hours medical care more sustainable and add to the skill mix of doctors available. “

With having both practices under the Health Hub  umbrella, which also incorporates pathology, radiology, skin cancer unit and soon a pharmacy

 Dr Muir Wilson said that patients and the wider launceston community will greatly benefit from having a new purpose built space that is locally owned by health professionals.

 “The Health Hub allows GP's to work with patients to create a plan for their health from a team working together for the patient's best interests and outcomes. 

“At times it can be confusing for patients navigating a potentially fragmented health system and without good communication, errors are more likely to occur.”

Likewise  Dr Glenn Richardson of Parkview  said that the merger is the way forward for medicine in Tasmania and believes that more practices should consider it. 

“We will certainly see more of these mergers happening as legislations change and it gets harder to be a practice owner, what is happening here is very pro-active, Jerome is very much different to GP’s of his generation and it has been very refreshing to work with him.” 

With Parkview patients geared up for the move from Brisbane Street to Wellington Street, Dr Richardson said the merger had been met with excitement and interest. 

“We have had no negative feedback from patients, we believe in evolving while ensuring patient care is not affected, our patients and GP’s will benefit from the contemporary services at the hub.”
