Russell, 23, is a third generation Saint following in his grandfather and father Tim’s footsteps.
President Ian McCallum said the decision was the most significant appointment in his tenure at the club.
“His grandfather played in a premiership in the 1950s and Tim was a player and president in the early 2000s,” McCallum said.
“Alex’s passion for the club is head and shoulders above anything else, that’s the great thing.” The former South Launceston and Western Storm player replaces St Pats great Dayle O’Neill.
Russell said he would lock in his coaching team during the next few weeks. “I’m excited to have my first crack at senior coaching,” he said.
“The players we’ve got and developed under Dayle are all very capable and if we can bring in four or five top-end players I think we can be a top side.
