He spent months in rehabilitation and was faced with the enormous challenge of relearning how to take a step.
“I went over the side of the road and when I opened my eyes I realised I had broken my back – it was a tough few months,” he said.
Mr Winwood will test himself next month when he takes part in the Balfour Burn – a 400-metre, 21-degree climb up one of Launceston’s steepest hills.
“I’m going to attempt to get as far as I can, it will be a big challenge but I’m up for it,” he said.
The money raised on the day will go to St Giles.
The event is held on October 9, to register visit the St Giles website.
