Paralympians
WHAT an amazing show of courage from the athletes that represented Australia at the Paralympics, people who have faced unbelievable challenges in their life. We should not be concerned about how many medals were won, but 88 is a fantastic achievement.

The only things missing were the excuses if they did not win a medal, the fact that they had competed at all is a fantastic effort.
Are they rewarded for winning gold, we are told that the able bodied athletes receive up to $20,000 for a gold medal and have mega dollar sponsorship deals. What do the paralympians get?
Margaret and Harvey Gibbons, George Town.
Bus service
WHAT a poor state of affairs to bus people between hospitals and it does not even include Port Sorell area and I guess some other outer areas.
People for starts have to get themselves to the bus stops and you do not want to miss one been held up at a hospital for last ride home.
Then if one is required for after hours then one is all up to themselves to get there.
Older people may not withstand the long trips there and back. They are not as young as one use to be.
Just penny pinching governments that do not want to cough up the money, but cater for refugees as the refugees cost a huge amount.
Walter Christy, Shearwater.
Fox files
MILLIONS of taxpayer dollars were spent on the controversial Fox Eradication Program and now what does a state government department do?
Blocks the fox files release on the so-called grounds that it may hurt Tasmania's relationship with the Commonwealth.
Does the government think Tasmanians are that gullible?
What could possibly be in the reports for them to remain out of public scrutiny? Unless there is something to hide.
I say, for the sake of transparency, and freedom of information the files should have been immediately made public.
Robert Lee, Summerhill.
Flood Repairs
THE repairs to parts of the state that were damaged by the June record floods is still slowly going ahead.
Most areas will not be repaired before the summer and tourist season arrives.
If man power is lacking why hasn’t the state government put in place extra staffing from the unemployed lists.
There must be heaps of able bodied people out there getting paid for doing nothing that could be put to doing some valuable work for the state.
David Parker, West Launceston.
North East Rail
I READ with interest the recent article on the private enterprise possibility of a “Puffing Billy” type rail tourist attraction on the Launceston to Scottdale line.
What a wonderful win-win if it could be brought to fruition.
The Launceston area is screaming out to have another attraction to give tourists a reason to stay an extra night in Launceston.
Scottsdale could win by providing overnight accommodation and other facilities for the hard nosed bike riders that feel capable of riding to Herrick and back in a day or two.
If concrete sleepers were fitted to the track the space in between could be gravelled to simultaneously cause a bike trail at little cost.
However toilet blocks and other shelter facilities would need to be built along the bike track to prevent trespassing on farm land and so on.
Come on Premier Will Hodgman, we dare you to spend some money in Northern Tasmania and upgrade the track.
The same amount that you may be about to spend on the Derwent Valley Line will do.
