The seven-year-old gelding lines up in a Benchmark 72 Handicap over just 1000 metres –  a long way removed from the Hobart Cup trip of 2400m in his last race back in February where he finished 11th.

Campbell said the decision to give Aventador a long break came after the horse performed better than expected last preparation, winning three races and running a strong fourth in the Devonport Cup.

“There was no dramas with him, we just decided to give him a long spell after a pretty hard campaign over the summer,” Campbell explained.

“The Hobart Cup was probably just a bit too classy for him and he was at the end of his preparation, but the Devonport Cup was actually a good race and he only got beat by one-and-a-half lengths.

“When he came into work (last season) he was pretty low-rated and probably did more than we expected from him. 

“He won’t be too competitive on Sunday over 1000m but it’s a starting point for him and if he just works home well on Sunday I’ll be happy with him.”

All things going well, Campbell is hoping to aim the horse, who has won total prizemoney of $67,175, at two of the feature races in the South of the State.

“I’m just hoping he gets going and and he could win one of those races like a Summer Cup or a Brighton Cup – those races that are just a step down from the better ones,” the hall of fame trainer said.

While Aventador may be at the back of the field, Campbell does have a definite winning chance in the race with Teriki.

The four-year-old mare has a win and two second placings from her impressive last three starts, which have all come from the synthetic surface.

“Teriki is the horse to beat I suppose, she’s going really good and ran second the other day when they broke the track record,” Campbell said. 

“It looks a nice race for her on paper and she gets some weight relief with Raquel Clark on board. 

“It’s not a big field, but it’s a strong field.”

The Adam Trinder-trained Steel Moon is expected to put forward a strong showing after winning two Benchmark 72 races at the track over 1150m in its last two eye-catching outings.

After a quiet winter, Campbell is looking forward to the busier spring months leading into the summer cups season

“I’ve got a nice horse in the maiden on Sunday named It’s A Battle and a few others in, and while it’s been quiet in the off-season it will start revving up soon,” he said.
