Emergency services were called to the scene about 2 kilometres south of Oatlands about 1.10pm.
Police said the crash occurred as a result of a trailer being towed by a White Mitsubishi Ute disconnecting from the vehicle.
This caused the ute to roll into the path of oncoming traffic, subsequently colliding with a Blue Toyota 4WD travelling north.
The male driver of the Ute was trapped in his vehicle for a short time and had to be cut free by SES Road Accident Rescue personnel.
He was subsequently airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter with non-life threatening injuries.
The occupants of the Toyota were not injured as a result of the crash.
Any witnesses are asked to contact Sergeant Rob Cooke at Oatlands Police Station on 6254 0014 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
