External renovations to the building began last week with new weatherboards fitted to the front of the building, while exterior repainting is expected to begin by the end of next month.
Longford PCYC president Peter Mackenzie said while the building was structurally sound, a few basic repairs would do it a world of good.
“The most immediate (issue) is getting the painting done so it looks better in the community and for the community,” Mr Mackenzie said.
“That's the short term, longer term would be making the kitchen more usable and useful and then probably a replacement of the toilet block.
“(The painting) will get started by the end of October hopefully, that's weather permitting but if we suddenly get rain for a week it puts everything back.”
The PCYC complex also houses a men’s shed, a community garden and a sizeable grassed area.
Mr Mackenzie said while the men’s shed and garden were being heavily utilised, he was interested in exploring what further uses could be found for the building and adjacent grounds.
A Longford community house has been discussed as a potential option for the site, although the PCYC building in its current format is unlikely to suit such a development.
Mr Mackenzie encouraged any Longford residents interested in improving the complex to consider joining a small PCYC steering committee.
“We'd like some local community members who would like to work on a working group to see what is possible (for the building) and how we make that happen.
“If this building’s not the best building for a community house, could we put one on this site and how would that work?”
The complex also houses two office spaces which could suit small service groups or organisations.
“We'd paint those offices if someone wanted to go in; we'd welcome community groups who may not have a representation in this community.”
