Tasmanian Trout Expo committee president Richard Goss said several hundred atlantic salmon and rainbow trout – including Tina the tagged $10,000 trout - would be released into the river before each day of competition.
“It's a great weekend and we have a lot of families and a lot of people try to come out and catch a fish,” Mr Goss said.
“It's a great place to come to have a family day by the river, set up some chairs and go and have a picnic lunch.”
This year’s competition is set to attract more than 2500 people over the weekend, including a number of intrastate and interstate visitors.
“A lot of people come from the North-West Coast and from Hobart as well and every year we have quite a few people coming in from the mainland just for the event.
“We've got regulars who come every year from the mainland and they've been here since the first event.”
The event will wrap up with a schools competition on Monday, which will see 420 students from 30 schools across the state try their luck at reeling in a monster catch.
Entry is $10 for adults, or $15 for a weekend pass, while under-14s can enter for $5 a day or $8 for the weekend.
