Mr Babinsky landed in the state this week with his wife Jenna and their sons Ryan and Emmett.
He has swapped places with Launceston firefighter Roger Brown as part of the International Firefighter Exchange Fellowship.
Working as a firefighter/paramedic in Winnipeg, Mr Babinsky said he was nervous and excited to perform his role in a new environment.
“I’m eager to learn and develop professionally and grow as an individual, and I thought the exchange would be ideal for that,” he said.
Dealing with mostly structure and vehicle fires in Winnipeg, Mr Babinsky said working in Launceston would provide him with knowledge about bush and vegetation firefighting strategies.
“We don't deal a lot with vegetation fires, so it’s going to be ideal over this next firefighting season to see what I can learn and take back home to build our own bushfire program,” he said.
The exchange is also Mr Babinsky’s first trip to Australia and he said so far it had been “wonderful”.
“It’s exceeded our expectations already,” he said.
“It’s such a beautiful place and everyone has been so welcoming and accepting.”
Launceston station officer Jaron Oosterloo said the crew were looking forward to having Mr Babinsky onboard.
“We get the benefit of learning about different techniques they may use that could transfer across to our station,” he said.
“We’re all passionate about our jobs and we all love doing what we do so it’s interesting to learn how our firefighter brotherhood works in different parts of the world.”
