More than 100 people attended the museum's launch on Saturday, including visitors from as far west as Smithton and as far north as Brisbane.
Mr Sims, who operates St Helens Heritage Couta Boat Cruises, said he had been collecting maritime memorabilia for as long as he could remember.
“I've had a collection at Stanley for quite a few years, so this one is mostly made up of the collection from up there but I’ve also added a lot of local content from here,” Mr Sims said.
“It's a hands-on type of collection where it's not locked away - it's a massive collection of memorabilia from Tasmania, Australia, and a lot of international bits and pieces as well.”
Mr Sims thanked Break O’Day Council and the Break O’Day Business Enterprise Centre for their help in getting the museum up and running.
Maritime and Heritage Collection is located at 61 Tully Street.
