A planning application was received by the council in June, and was released for public consultation on Wednesday.
The proposed car park extension will convert the VIP Sheds site on the corner of Howick and Wellington streets into a dual drive through.
The applications stated that the plans will better accommodate existing parking demands and drive through queuing, with space to allow for extra parking.
If approved the existing buildings at the VIP shed site will be demolished to make way for the extended drive through.
Public consultation closes on Tuesday, September 6.
