“We've got to arrange the funding and timing but hopefully around February or March we’ll be started because we've got to do it in the months when the weather is better,” he said.
Alderman van Zetten said he believed the revamped Quadrant Mall, which was offically reopened on Friday, was received well by the community.
“They want to see more things happening in Launceston and the Civic Square is going to be one of those, and then we will get to the Mall, the Avenue, and all of that will tie into what’s happening at UTAS,” he said.
“What we're hoping to see is a lot more accommodation in the city, a way for people to be able to come in on bicycles or walk, and be able to move around the city in a way that's going to be easy to do.”
The revitalised Civic Square is expected to include a playspace, landscaping, paving, seating and shelter, as well as a flexible event area with a covered stage, terraced landscape seating and a grassed area.
