A small number of healthy devils will be released at the Stony Head Military Training site on Tuesday to live with the existing population of devils.
Working with the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program, Senior Sergeant Justin Bidgood said police were reminding drivers to be aware of the risk of animals on the road.
“Police will continue to have a strong presence on rural roads,” he said.
“We also remind people that they can contact police if they wish to report any incidents or have any information about poor driving behaviour.”
Stony Head trial leader Samantha Fox said the initial period of time after a release was crucial.
“We lost four devils to roadkill at Narawntapu in the first two weeks post-release in September and 11 devils in the first month on the Forestier Peninsula late last year,” she said.
“Roadkill is a real issue and that’s why working with Tasmania Police is a key part of our planning and mitigation measures.”
