A bike, chains and a number of cigarette butts were just some of the items pulled from the Tamar River on Friday. More than 150 people, including students from Launceston College, participated in Sea Shepherd Tasmania’s marine debris clean-up at Royal Park.

“You’re never surprised by what you find,” Sea Shepherd volunteer coordinator Michael Bruhn said.
The organisation held a clean-up in the same area in May and collected more than 6000 pieces of rubbish.
Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson also took part in the clean-up, suggesting a state-based scheme is crucial.
“A recycling refund scheme could work really well, you put a value on something it’s no longer rubbish,” Mr Whish-Wilson said.
