Break O'Day Business Enterprise Centre manager Nick Crawford was named best regional advisor at a BEC Australia awards night earlier this month, fending off strong competition from a host of “smart cookies” around the country.
Mr Crawford said taking a hands-on approach was key to understanding and consequently helping small businesses.
“I really like to get to know people's business, so I'll go out on a fishing boat for a day or I'll go and work in a bakery or I'll go and help pick pepperberries so I understand what it is they're trying to do and how they go about it,” Mr Crawford said.
Mr Crawford said the business sector was as strong as it had ever been on the East Coast.
“The Break O'Day municipality is absolutely humming, it's the success story of the state.
“Even in the middle of winter the businesses are all going well, we've had no business closures for a long time so I hope we're playing our bit in doing that.”
