At its July meeting the council voted against a sponsorship request which would have seen the 2017 stage held on April 25.
Much of the debate centred on the appropriateness of the town hosting the motorsport on Anzac Day next year, as well as safety concerns, cost of council staff on public holidays, and course route.
A report in the council’s agenda, authored by general manager John Martin and community development manager Anne Cameron, said new information had come to light through meetings with the George Town RSL Sub Branch and Targa Tasmania since the decision was made.
“At both of these meetings the logistics of the event were discussed with all agreeing that both events were able to be successfully held on Anzac Day 2017, subject to council agreement,” the report stated.
“Letters of support for Targa to be held in George Town in 2017 have also since been received from the RSL and the George Town Chamber of Commerce with both organisations expressing concern at the negative publicity that council’s decision has generated.”
The sponsorship deal for the Targa Tasmania George Town Super Stage would be for a term of three years, with an option to renew for two years, and a financial contribution of $12,500 in year one and more in following years.
