Anthony James, a UTAS School of Business and Economics PhD candidate, is working with the Hawthorn Football Club to research how spectators engage with sporting events in the state.
Mr James will focus on Saturday’s match in Launceston between the Hawks and Carlton.
“From that one game we’ll learn a lot about how people spend their time before, during and after a game,” he said.
“Giving us a full picture of not just their involvement with the game but their involvement with tourism, local businesses, retail and hospitality as well.”
The survey will open after Saturday’s game and Mr James said he hoped his work would help strengthen AFL in Tasmania.
“I think the government has invested quite a bit in supporting AFL in the state, so it's important to start addressing some of the economical issues,” he said.
Dr Michael Craw, who is supervising Mr James, said the research could help improve the spectator experience.
“This work may help identify emerging trends, demands or expectations among spectators, allowing sports marketers to develop strategies to ensure fans aren’t distracted or drawn to alternatives,” Dr Craw said.
Those participating in the survey will also have the chance to win two signed caps and a signed lithographed jumper from the Hawthorn Football Club.
