Having studied neuroscience throughout the year with medical scientist and school laboratory manager Linda Brown, the school found success in both major competitions, with Lily Haley, Gemma McArthur and Lauren O’Sullivan recording a trifecta in the individual competition before teaming up with Hannah LeFevre to clinch the teams event.
Mrs Brown said all nine students had pushed themselves at a challenging topic.
“It’s way above what you would normally do at grade 10 level – the Menzies Institute were really impressed with how the students went that’s for sure,” Mrs Brown said.
“They were absolutely fantastic, all of the students would probably have got over 90 per cent of the questions right, they were really good.”
Mrs Brown said the state final also provided students with some valuable insight into the medical industry.
“They got to do tours of all the labs down there because a couple of them want to go on and do medicine, so it was a really good eye-opener to see if that’s a field they may want to study in the future.”
The national final now awaits individual competition winner Lily Haley, who will return to Hobart in December for the chance to reach the international final in Denmark.
