With three rounds left, Belconnen United, who have lost just once all year, only need to beat Canberra United Academy, who are yet to secure a competition point, to have an unassailable buffer.

Heavy rainfall has forced the cancellation of numerous games, although this week's remaining WPL matches will still be played.

The prospective title would be particularly sweet for Amy Spence, who missed the last two years while recovering from a knee reconstruction.

But the experienced defender insists they'll have to work hard for the result.

"It's just about being relaxed going into the game, but making sure we're switched on and we're doing the things we need to do right to get the win," Spence said.

"[Canberra United Academy] have improved and developed every single game that we've played, so I definitely think they're going to put it to us, which is great.

"It's exciting for the young girls and the girls who have been playing in the team for a long time. We train hard, and I think that persistence has really paid off."

Though Academy haven't won a game, Spence believes their inclusion in the Premier League is worthwhile.

"I think it's a good developmental experience for them. They're going to be feeding through into the women's Premier League division so I think it's a really good stepping stone for them to get that experience at such a young age," she said.

Belconnen defender Lauren Keir agrees thrusting the young Academy side into the Premier League will fast track their development.

"They're always competitive," Keir said.

"They definitely know how to give the opposition a good contest.

"There's a lot of potential in that group of girls so there's a promising future for them."

Even after winning five years in a row, Keir maintains her team has the desire and the structure to continue their streak into the future.

"We strive to be champions," she said.

"There's really good potential in the young ones coming through the under 20s as well as the girls who are getting brought in from different clubs to come and play for Belconnen."

Sunday's men's National Premier League game between Monaro Panthers and Cooma Tigers has been moved from Riverside to Duncan Oval in Googong.

A decision on the other men's NPL games will be made on the weekend.
