Tourist drivers
THE exciting growth in the number of tourists coming to our state is wonderful and is giving a boost to all parts of Tasmania. However these tourists who hire cars or vans to tour Tasmania are presenting some road hazards due to their inexperience as drivers and their lack of local knowledge.

I am informed that an international driver’s license is available in China merely by completing the application with no particular concern for driving skill or knowledge of road rules. Add to this the need to drive on the ‘wrong’ side of the road and our island’s mountainous nature and we have a recipe for ‘close encounters’ and accidents. It is totally disconcerting when you meet another driver travelling the wrong way about a roundabout.
We can do something about this by providing basic instruction on the Bass Strait ferries for all such drivers or by insisting that hire car people ensure some knowledge of our road rules and display of driving skill before allowing vehicle hire.

Bred to run
MICK Leppard (The Examiner, July 19) says “Before anyone jumps up and down about dogs being adopted as pets, greyhounds are bred to and love to run, they can’t do that in a house or small back yard”.
That’s why we take them for walkies and let them run around places like the disused Deloraine racecourse.

COUNCIL DEMOLITION
WHAT a waste as Devonport council is demolished. Now how wonderful is the size of the library earmarked for demolition next on list but this should be prevented from demolition as it would make a wonderful sized social club with a huge dance floor, plenty space to spare and virtually new carpets.
It would bring more people into the area with a facelift to the building and not much needed if used wisely.
If council wanted the could build a underground carpark next door where they plan to building a raised carpark that would be ugly for the area.
