Tasmania is on flood alert after significant rainfalls across the state overnight on Thursday.

Between 20 and 35 millimetres of rain fell at sites across the state, with elevated locations receiving up to 70 millimetres.
Moderate flood warnings are in place for the North and South Esk rivers, and initial minor flood warnings for the Meander, Mersey, Jordan, Macquarie and Derwent rivers.
A severe weather warning is also in place for damaging winds for the state.
Northwesterly and westerly winds of 60km/h with peaks of 100km/h will hit the state on Friday afternoon and evening.
In the North West, snow is possible above 700 metres on Friday, and above 200 metres on Saturday.

Thunderstorms are also forecast for the North and North West on Friday and Saturday.
The extreme weather comes courtesy of a significant cold front that will pass the state on Friday afternoon and evening.
